Nassau County resident Julie Debrosse, 31, of Elmont, has been sentenced to a term of seven to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to manslaughter, assault, and driving while intoxicated.
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said that at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Feb. 17 last year, Debrosse was driving north on Meacham Avenue in Elmont when she struck a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier in the driver’s side door as it was turning onto Meachem Avenue off B Street.
The driver of the Cavalier, 65-year-old Michael Saudo, was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to Singas, the investigation found that Debrosse was driving 88 mph in a 30 mph zone after driving home from a party in Queens. Police said she had a blood alcohol content of .14 an hour and a half after the crash.
Singas noted that Saudo, who previously served as a Captain in the Elmont Fire Department Rescue Company, was driving home from work at a bakery at the time of the crash and is survived by his adult children.
“Julie Debrosse was driving drunk at nearly three times the speed limit when she struck and killed an innocent man on his way home from work,” Singas said. “Our condolences are with the family and friends of Michael Saudo as they mourn his tragic loss.”
